The reliability of our food

February 7, 2010

Future planning for food must be balanced with population and the sustainability of food stocks, and the quality adequately researched with regard to health and the environment.

Notes

Auditing food quality is a major problem in the US and hence in Australia as well, as our standards are similar to the US and in addition much of our food is imported. Increasingly, the corporations that supply Americans with processed foods are unable to guarantee the safety of their ingredients.

Are factory farms a solution? Alternatively, small farms can be more efficient than large ones if we cost on nutrient value rather than quantity. Should we be growing super food such as the Baobab? Rooftop gardens should be integrated into urban developments for food, insulation, etc. Whatever happens, our food habits are likely to change, particularly in breaking the habits that food manufacturers have instilled.

Overfishing has to be managed to ensure future supplies and the environment must also be respected for the future, for example in the environmental impact of farms. But the elimination of food waste could have a major impact on world hunger and the environment.
